The Curtis Copy Book

[Check back later for MORE links to images.]

This family artifact is an 8”x 10” paper notebook with a sewn binding. It has sixty lined pages, plus one loose page from a separate notebook. Twenty-two of the pages contain handwritten vital statistics for the family of Alanson Curtis (1834-1909) and Mary Ellen Francis “Nellie” Chesley (1843-1917).

Based on those family members included in the work and the omission of others, I estimate that the record was begun around 1904-1905.

The information is presented mainly in two-page spreads of marriages, births, and deaths, grouped generally by family. There are some misspellings and not all information is complete or accurate. On the other hand, the existence of some family members would be entirely unknown today were it not for this record.

A number of events were clearly added later, as both handwriting and ink are different from that of the main body. An entire page has been copied almost verbatim on one side of the earlier-mentioned loose page. It appears to have been created in a separate notebook, possibly by another family member.

Family surnames found in the record are: Aldrich, Berry, Chesley, Colton, Cosgrove, Curtis, Goodsill, Hamerl, Hollinrake, Kirsenlohr, Morrison, Otstott, Russell, and Stewart. Officiants of wedding ceremonies are also mentioned: Boone, Doran, Lemieux, Moore, Redmon, Ross, and Stowe.

A solid jumping-off point for genealogical research, these facsimiles are for descendants of the Curtis family who are curious about their roots.
